We Have the Power

mouth-clip-art-6Yes, we have the power to build or destruct. I’ve always known that.

But amazingly, some people just do not know that even our mouths have that kind of power.   So, I want to suggest to folks everywhere around the world that positive speech is essential, its a must! And I’d like to post the following tips and suggestions to make it simple and habit-forming:

  1. If you’re going to say anything, say something positive. Like the good ol’ advise from mom: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!” Refrain from derogatory remarks at all costs. It shows a different level of maturity and politeness.
  2. By your words, build up others, and promote people’s well-being, do not put someone down. Negative statements about that person will have the power to cause harm, whether physical, financial, or emotional!
  3. Mind your teasing. Sure, jokes can be funny; absolutely. But whenever you’re joking make sure the jokes aren’t at someone else’s expense. I find there’s a time for everything, even jokes, but jokes about someone who is (fill in the blank) are just plain insensitive because we all know someone who is (fill in the blank).
  4. Have self-respect. The same way we shouldn’t put others down, don’t put yourself down. Negative statements about yourself to others just builds a negative cloud around you. Guess who will want to be near that cloud?
  5. Mind your actions. We can communicate in many ways other than verbal, such as through writing, body language, etc., therefore communicating negatively by posting harsh remarks or even making faces can be just as bad as saying it. Who knew!?! Avoid it at all costs.
  6. Don’t talk about others! Steer clear of gossip. Since it takes two to tango (in this case gossip) then don’t participate in it. Walking away, changing the subject, are some ways to avoid it.
  7. Give people the benefit of the doubt. We can be pretty tough about judging others rather quickly. Lean toward a favorable view when in doubt.
  8. Steer clear of stereotyping groups of people or organizations too. Making remarks about race, culture, sex, or gender are generalizations that discriminate. The world doesn’t need more division among us, on the contrary, it needs to be in harmony even if we are all different.
  9. Be nice! Try to always communicate with friends, family, loved ones, neighbors and strangers with kind, supportive words. You just never know what they’re going through. Trust me.
  10. And last but not least, do something in an emergency! Don’t just be a passerby or robotic in your life. For Lord’s sake, act, help, warn others about potential harm!

I must admit: I am guilty of some…. well, many of these, including negative actions. For example, making negative remarks (especially about my ex-husband) and jumping to conclusions too quickly. So, this year it is my desire to change how I utilize my mouth to spread joy instead of spewing hate.

Ever wish you could take something back? Right now my list is growing exponentially. Here’s to a new and improved me, starting with these habits for the New Year.
